NHS Crisis Cafe Torbay Hospital

NHS Torbay Hospital – Health & Wellbeing Centre

Contract Value: £600K

Location: Torquay

Client: Devon Partnership NHS Trust

Project Name: NHS Crisis Café

In 2024 the Charteroak (South West) Ltd team successfully delivered a substantial internal refurbishment of the existing Health & Wellbeing unit to create a new welcoming and multi-functional environment for both staff and patients.

Working in a sensitive environment to ensure minimal disruption to staff and patients, required careful planning. The work was carried out in phases in partnership with the client, centre management and staff which then evolved as the project progressed.  The initial strip out required the removal of walls and ceilings to allow us to start on the redesign of space. We were then able to work on commercially upgrading the electrics, fire alarm and air conditioning systems, replace fire doors, windows, install new ceilings and new walls all of which adhered to national healthcare construction standards and met the design build needs.

The existing layout was reconfigured to form additional consultant treatment rooms, an extra admin office, a new cleaner’s store and activity room, and most importantly a Crisis Café area that would accommodate vulnerable people, when they need it most.

Staff amenities were enhanced to include a new kitchen servery area, Community staff base and team meeting room, staff shower and WC, new benching for IT Classrooms all which will contribute to staff wellbeing.

Disabled access for patients was much improved with the formation of 2 new car parking spaces at the entrance and the landscaping of the existing courtyard and footpath to offer an accessible safe path leading to the main entrance.

The completed works, Internal redecoration, improved lighting and heating has transformed this hospital department to provide a positive patient experience.
